Modular Pools vs In-Ground Pools: 2026 Cost, Install Time & When Each Wins
If you’ve spent five minutes researching backyard pools, you’ve already run into the sticker shock. A traditional gunite in-ground pool in 2026 runs $65,000 to $150,000+ nationally, with a six-to-eight-month install window that often stretches past a full swim season. That’s real money and real time.
Modular pools are the alternative most homeowners haven’t heard of — and once they do, the question is usually the same: is this actually as good as an in-ground pool, or am I giving something up?
Here’s the honest breakdown, from an Idaho dealer that quotes both.
The 30-second answer
- Choose an in-ground pool if: you want a fully custom shape, negative-edge or vanishing-edge features, deep-end diving, or your yard already has excavation access and you plan to stay in the home 15+ years.
- Choose a modular pool if: you want to swim this season, keep the budget under $80,000, have limited excavation access, want to install on a slope, or want a pool that fits your yard instead of the other way around.
For the majority of Idaho backyards we quote, a modular Metric pool wins on both cost and time-to-first-swim. But not always — and the details matter.
What “modular pool” actually means
Not all modular pools are equal. The Metric Series pool by Radiant Pools — the modular system we’re the authorized Idaho dealer for — is built from 2-inch insulated aluminum wall panels with a closed-cell EPS (expanded polystyrene) foam core. The construction technology was originally developed for the NASA Space Program and has been refined by Radiant (formerly Trojan Pools) for over 60 years.
Radiant invented the vinyl-liner aluminum pool category in 1957. Every Metric pool ships with a non-prorated, fully transferable lifetime warranty on the structure — the same class of warranty you’d get on a well-built gunite shell.

Cost breakdown (2026 national ranges)
Traditional in-ground gunite (14’x28′)
- Pool shell + install: $50,000 – $90,000
- Decking, coping, water fill: $12,000 – $30,000
- Equipment pad (heater, filter, automation): $8,000 – $18,000
- Landscaping, fencing, permits: $5,000 – $20,000
- National total range: $65,000 – $150,000
Modular Metric (14’x28′ equivalent)
- Pool package + install: $22,000 – $45,000
- Site prep + backfill: $3,000 – $10,000
- Equipment package: $4,000 – $9,000
- Decking, fencing, permits: $3,000 – $15,000
- National total range: $30,000 – $70,000
Idaho pricing sits in the national mid-range. Same water features, same heater options, same saltwater capability, same lifetime-warranty shell. The cost gap of roughly $35,000–$80,000 for equivalent size and features is why modular is winning market share nationally, especially in mid-sized backyards.
Install time — this is where modular really wins
We’ve tracked this on every install we’ve done since 2015. First swim on a gunite pool takes 4–8 months. First swim on a Metric modular takes 3–5 weeks.
If you sign a contract in April, a Metric pool has you swimming by Memorial Day. A gunite pool has you swimming in September — if the weather cooperates. That difference is a full swim season, and in Idaho we have about 100 comfortable outdoor swim days a year.
When gunite still wins
- Extreme free-form shapes beyond what Radiant’s Freeform Metric offers
- Depths beyond 6 feet — diving pools, deep ends
- Vanishing edges, negative edges, elevated spas
- Full custom tile finishes
- Home value $2M+ where the pool is a design centerpiece
When Metric is the smarter buy

The bottom line
For most Idaho backyards under $100K of pool budget and any home worth under $1.5M, Metric is the smarter buy in 2026. Faster to install, roughly half the cost, lifetime-warranty shell, same features.
