SANITIZER GUIDE · SNAKE RIVER POOL & SPA

Bromine tablets for your hot tub

Bromine is a steady, forgiving sanitizer that holds up well in hot water. Here's how bromine tablets work, how much to keep in the water, and how to use them safely.

Why bromine?

Bromine stays active across a wider pH range than chlorine and stays stable at hot tub temperatures, and many owners notice less of a chemical smell. Tablets dissolve slowly, so a floater or feeder keeps a steady level between soaks.

Bromine vs. chlorine

Bromine: slower to act, longer lasting, easy to keep steady with tablets. Chlorine: faster acting and easy to dose with granules, but it needs more frequent topping up. Pick one and stick with it; never mix bromine and chlorine products.

Target ranges

LevelTarget
Bromine3–5 ppm
pH7.2–7.8
Total alkalinity80–120 ppm

Common ranges. Follow your spa's owner's manual and the product label.

If your water is hard, keep up with stain & scale control. Scale on the floater or jets is a common Treasure Valley sign of hard fill water. Get a free water analysis.

How to start bromine in a fresh fill

  1. Balance total alkalinity and pH first.
  2. Build a bromide reserve with a fast-dissolving brominating product, following the label for your spa's gallons.
  3. Load bromine tablets into a floater or a feeder made for tablets. Never put tablets in the skimmer or filter area unless your spa's maker says it's designed for it.
  4. Adjust the floater's opening until your test strips read 3–5 ppm, then check two to three times a week.
  5. Shock after heavy use or once a week to break down oils and reactivate bromide.
  6. Remove the floater while bathing, and store tablets sealed, dry and away from other chemicals.

Chemical safety basics

  • Add chemicals to water, never water to chemicals.
  • Add one product at a time with the jets running and the cover open, and wait at least 20 minutes (or as the label directs) before adding the next.
  • Never mix chemicals together, dry or wet, and never mix bromine and chlorine products.
  • Store products sealed, cool, dry and out of reach of children and pets.
  • Always read and follow the product label and your spa owner's manual.

Free water analysis

Bring a water sample to any of our five showrooms (Boise, Meridian, Nampa, Twin Falls or Hailey), or request a time, and our team will test your water professionally and tell you exactly what to add, and what not to.

Bromine tablets FAQs

How many bromine tablets do I put in a hot tub?

It depends on your spa’s size, use and the product. Most owners fill a floater and adjust its opening until the water tests 3–5 ppm. Follow the tablet label for your gallons.

No. Use a floater or a feeder designed for tablets. Loose tablets can sit on surfaces and damage them.

A loaded floater usually lasts one to two weeks, depending on water temperature, bather load and the floater setting.

Heavy use, a clogged floater, low bromide reserve or high pH. Shock the spa, check pH and the floater, and retest. A free water analysis in our showrooms can pin it down.

Yes, but don’t mix them. Many owners drain and refill when switching. Ask our team before you change sanitizers.
