FILTER CARE GUIDE · SNAKE RIVER POOL & SPA

Hot tub filter cleaner and how to use it

Clean filters mean clearer water, stronger jets and less sanitizer. A rinse alone won't remove oils and scale. Here's when to use a filter cleaner, and how.

Rinse vs. deep clean

Rinse loose debris with a garden hose every week or two. Spray or soak with a spa filter cleaner about once a month to remove oils, lotions and scale that water alone leaves behind. Replace the cartridge every 12–24 months, or sooner with heavy use or hard water.

What not to use

Skip dish soap, laundry detergent, bleach and the dishwasher. They can leave residue that causes foam, or break down the filter fabric. Use a cleaner made for spa filters.

ID

Hard Idaho water can leave mineral scale in filter pleats. If a filter still looks crusty after cleaning, a scale-removing filter cleaner or a new cartridge is usually the fix. Get a free water analysis.

How to deep-clean a hot tub filter

  1. Turn off power to the spa at the panel or breaker.
  2. Remove the filter and rinse each pleat from top to bottom with a garden hose.
  3. Spray with an instant filter cleaner, or soak in a spa filter cleaner solution for the time on the label.
  4. Rinse thoroughly until no foam or residue remains.
  5. Let it dry if you can (a spare filter makes this easy), reinstall, and restore power.

Chemical safety basics

  • Add chemicals to water, never water to chemicals.
  • Add one product at a time with the jets running and the cover open, and wait at least 20 minutes (or as the label directs) before adding the next.
  • Never mix chemicals together, dry or wet, and never mix bromine and chlorine products.
  • Store products sealed, cool, dry and out of reach of children and pets.
  • Always read and follow the product label and your spa owner's manual.

Free water analysis

Bring a water sample to any of our five showrooms (Boise, Meridian, Nampa, Twin Falls or Hailey), or request a time, and our team will test your water professionally and tell you exactly what to add, and what not to.

Filter cleaner FAQs

How often should I use filter cleaner on my hot tub filter?

About once a month, with a hose rinse every week or two in between. Clean more often with heavy use.

Dish soap leaves residue that causes foam. Vinegar can help with scale but won’t remove oils well. A spa filter cleaner does both safely.

Follow the cleaner’s label; soaks typically run from a few hours to overnight. Rinse thoroughly afterward.

Every 12–24 months, or when pleats are torn, flattened or still dirty after a deep clean. Bring your old filter in so we can match it.

We stock Hot Spring® and Caldera® replacement filters. Bring the old filter or your spa model number to any showroom and our team will help you find the right fit.
